John DeYoung & Naked Hearts
Written by John DeYoung

Story

This song was on the first Naked Hearts CD and I decided to release it as a single, since it's been getting a lot of internet radio plays. It's now available on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, CDBaby, and most other download sites.  Here's the link to CDBaby -

Lyrics

THE FLOW

I don’t believe in the block of the flow of the stream

Just an excuse to walk away

From the truth that’s as clear as the day

I believe in the voice always there to be heard

Listen up, quiet down

It’s a message without any words

As you sit and be still through the night comes the day

With the light you can see

That the forest has not gone away

And the birds in the trees carry on

Even though you look away and worry

That someone might be sneaking up from behind

To steal your precious diamonds and gold

That’s as worthless as sand

In blocking the flow of the stream

Story

I wrote this song with the TV series "The Curse Of Oak Island" in mind.  I like watching the show and was inspired at the end of the 2016 season when Rick Lagina said "This is the kind of thing people write stories and songs about"....or something of that nature.  I was trying to get the song to them, but couldn't find a connection, so now it's on CDbaby, iTunes, Amazon and most other download sites...maybe they'll find it!

Lyrics

OAK ISLAND

Down on Oak Island

Time, movin’ on

And still we don’t know

How far we have to go

Down on Oak Island

Six souls have been lost

Will one more have to go

But time keeps movin’ on

And still we don’t know

If we’ll ever find a thing

Down on Oak Island

Lyrics

You Can't Please Them All

I'll never try again

To be who I'm not

I'm just gonna' be who I came here to be

And I'll never try again

I'm livin' the life that I dream

And no one can take that from me

Say what you want but it's only for naught

'Cause I'm linin' the life that I dream

Tryin' to please someone else

Never did work out

Tryin' to be who they wanted me to be

I soon realized I can't please them all

I'm just gonna' do what I came here to do

And that's live the life that I dream

Tryin' to please someone else

Never will work out

Tryin' to be who they want you to be

You'll soon realize you can't please them all

Lyrics

HOW DO YOU FEEL

We're here in the same way that they are there

They're there in the same way that we are here

No matter where you are

No matter what your scene

No matter who you believe

It's how you feel

What we are, is what we believe

And what we believe, is who we are

We're here in the same way that they are there

They're there in the same way that we are here

No matter what you think

No matter what you dream

It's about how you feel

How do you feel?

Story

This is my latest recording using some new "plug-in's" for my VS2480.  I wrote this song a few years ago, thinking about friends and others struggling with depression or just internal conflicts.....myself included.  Finally got around to recording it.  This is a reference mix and will probably change, but I wanted to share it.

Story

I wrote this song for producer/director, John Stark for his film "Sons Of Freedom", but it turned out to ironically reflect my life changes as I had just moved to New Mexico from California. My old friend & music partner, Bill Jones, came out from Calif. and helped me record it in my Tijeras, N.M. studio. Bill played one of the acoustic guitars and the keyboard part and came up with the key hook lines. Thanks Bill! It wouldn't be the same song without your influence.  All other parts by John DeYoung.

Lyrics

Eyes Wide Open

Board the Train Escape the war

This time have I gone too far

Is what's ahead what's behind

This time what will I find

Ride the rail, chase the stars

What can I lose after all

Don't know what's ahead

But I'm pretty sure I'll find out

Eyes wide open, feelers out

Story

This is a song I wrote years ago but never recorded.  Over the years I changed some of the lyrics and added parts here and there.  I always wanted to record it but it sat on the back shelf, occasionally bringing it out to play with.  I finally got around to recording it in 2012 in my Tijeras studio and Brian Boggs played the harmonica part...Thanks Brian!  All other parts by John DeYoung.

Lyrics

Live For Life

Live for life, not so long lasting

Time is short, take time for basking

You and me, we make what have we

Imprisoned or free, time is passing

Live for the moment, live for today

Some live only minutes, some live for hours

Some live long lifetimes, some live for power

No one is immortal, no special favors

Live life in loving and peaceful endeavors

Live for the moment, live for today

Story

I wrote this song back in the 80's while a member of "The Dots".  We used to play it live, but never completed the recording.  I've re-worked it and changed some of the lyrics.  For this one I played all the parts and sang all the vocals.  Love my home studio!

Story

I've been writing music for John Stark Productions for several years now. John Stark is currently working on a feature film to be entitled Sons Of Freedom. John asked me to write some music for the film, and this song is something I put together with my old friend & music partner, Bill Jones. I had the original chord structure and Bill helped me arrange it and came up with the Banjo Uke and keyboard parts. We had a great time with this one.

Lyrics

DIG A LITTLE DEEPER

Dig a little deeper, reach a little farther

And when you think you're there, go farther still

There is so much more than what lays on the surface

So dig a little deeper, reach a little farther

And when you think you're there, go farther still

The depths of the world

The tales of time

Embedded in stone, underneath our feet

The expanse of the heavens

The infinite blue

Up above our heads, filling our chests anew

And here we stand, between the heavens and the depths

Connecting all that's been, with all that's yet to come

Just remember that there is always more than what lays on the surface

So dig a little deeper

Reach a little farther

And when you think you're there, go farther still

And then you will soar

This is a new instrumental theme song I wrote for Joe Morrissey's "Trenchcat" - A sort of comic strip spy/sleuth series soon to be released on the internet.  This was lots of fun to do...takes me back to my 60's roots.

Story

This song is the theme song for the play "Night Song for the Boatman" by Jovanka Bach. Directed by John Stark, it will run at the Odyssey Theatre in Los Angeles and at the Barrow Theatre in New York in the fall of 2010. John DeYoung wrote the song for the play and recorded & played all the instrumental parts. The vocal is by Amanda Landis who is playing the lead female character in the production.

Lyrics

Night Song

Where are you going, why do you have to leave

I just got to know you, won't you tell me please

Sweet childhood memories, drift on the evening breeze

Come to me in my dreams

Come to set us free

School days and puppet shows

Long walks and ice cream cones

Linger in my mind

A fantasy life turned real

A dream that we both could feel

Now you're going away

The boatman awaits you there

Waits to collect his fare, and take you far away

A cruel twist of destiny

The boatman, my enemy

Must be another way

Story

Lyrics

Lay Down Your Gun

Lay Down your gun

Lay Down your gun

For the sake of your mother's son

Look without eyes

Look without eyes

See from the side of her heart

Hear another voice

Sing another song

Walk another way

Take your brother's arm

Lay down your gun
